Challenges

The biggest challenges in the banking industry

Legacy core banking systems

New competitors and shifting customer interfaces

AI is changing the banking business

Innovation under regulatory requirements

Securing know-how and building new skills

Mainframes, COBOL applications, home-grown systems and hundreds of interfaces still shape the IT of many banks today, in some cases with products that have been in use for more than 20 years. New cloud solutions and modern customer interfaces have to fit into a hybrid architecture without putting stability, compliance or the cost-income ratio at risk.

Digital platforms, fintechs and embedded finance providers are shifting the customer interface. These providers increasingly occupy the direct access to the customer that used to belong to the bank advisor or the bank's own app. Embedded finance and banking-as-a-service are reshaping customer access. Financial services are increasingly integrated straight into other digital offerings, for example when buying a car, financing a property or shopping online. Anyone who cannot connect here loses the direct line to their own customer.

Artificial intelligence is changing lending, customer service, fraud detection and compliance. It supports specialist teams in analyzing large volumes of data, prepares decisions and automates recurring tasks. For banks, AI is therefore becoming a decisive competitive factor.

DORA, BAIT, MaRisk and, increasingly, instant payments are basic prerequisites. The real question is not whether you are compliant, but whether you can still move fast enough under these conditions to keep pace with market and technology change. At the same time, AI-supported attacks, deepfakes, CEO fraud and identity theft raise the bar for cybersecurity and governance.

Banks have to preserve long-established expertise while building skills in areas such as AI, cloud, cybersecurity and data management. At the same time, many employees with decades of knowledge about central banking systems are retiring, and this know-how is hard to replace. Digital solutions can help make knowledge available and take recurring tasks off specialist teams in a targeted way. For fintechs, by contrast, the focus is less on preserving knowledge than on quickly building these skills and scalable processes.

AI agents

How AI agents can already support banking processes today

The Microsoft Dynamics 365 business applications already provide AI agents that take over recurring tasks and relieve specialist teams. For banks, this means one thing above all: they need a partner who does not see these capabilities as off-the-shelf software, but integrates them together with you into your processes, your data and your evolved system landscape, where they have a lasting impact.

Dynamics 365 Business Central

Automating incoming invoices

Payables Agent

Processes incoming vendor invoices from emails, reads the invoice data, identifies the right vendor and creates a draft invoice for review and approval. For banks this works well, for example, for invoices from IT partners, service providers and suppliers. The final check stays with people.
Dynamics 365 Finance - Preview

Reconciling accounts automatically

Account Reconciliation Agent

Continuously reconciles sub-ledger and general ledger, flags discrepancies and proposes a justified correction for each one. Useful for banks in account reconciliation and as groundwork for regulatory reporting. Every decision stays documented and auditable.

Dynamics 365 Customer Service

Capturing customer inquiries automatically

Case Management Agent

Tracks incoming inquiries from chat and email, recognizes the concern and creates the matching case automatically, categorized and with the right details. In a bank’s customer service this takes manual data entry off advisors before they decide.

Microsoft Defender - Preview

Prioritizing security alerts

Security Alert Triage Agent

Analyzes supported security alerts autonomously, distinguishes real threats from false alarms and documents its reasoning traceably. Among other things, it supports security teams in triaging phishing, identity and cloud alerts.
Microsoft Entra

Performing access reviews more efficiently

Access Review Agent

Supports access reviews by automatically gathering relevant information, highlighting potential risks and preparing decision proposals. For banks, this makes regular, traceable reviews of access rights easier. The final decision stays with the responsible reviewer.

AI agents only deliver their value once they are connected to the right business applications, integrations and data sources

Solutions

How we develop banking IT further

Every starting point is different. That is why we connect existing core systems, Microsoft technologies and custom development so that new solutions fit safely into your banking IT.

Where the standard does not fit

Custom software development

Banks often differ exactly where the standard ends: in lending processes, digital account opening, corporate customer portals or wealth management. That is why we develop specific custom applications and interlock them seamlessly with your existing IT. The result is efficient, cross-system business processes.

Governance & evidence

Identity, Security & Governance

Secure identities, granular permissions and complete audit trails are not a downstream compliance task in banks, they are part of the business model. They protect identities and data reliably and document regulatory evidence traceably. At the same time they create the basis for compliance, reporting and the safe use of AI.

After go-live

Managed Services

Operating, monitoring and continuously developing solutions after go-live. A partner who stays reachable after go-live, too.

Examples from practice

Our experience ranges from Landesbanken to specialized financial service providers. For regulatory reasons we cannot publish every project here. The following examples show two tasks from clients in the banking sector.

Financial Services Graphs AI GENERATED

Customer relationships bundled group-wide in one CRM

Initial situation: A financial service provider active across Europe in receivables management, with 13 companies in the DACH region, used different applications for its CRM tasks, some with manual processes. The goal was a central cloud platform with real-time transparency on customers and sales opportunities.

Solution: Introduction of standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales, first for one company and then rolled out across the entire group. Implementation was agile, in sprints, with training for administrators and key users.

Added value:

  • Go-live after only six weeks
  • 360-degree customer view with real-time reports and dashboards
  • Upgradable standard solution integrated with Office 365
Digitale Angebotskalkulation in der Baubranche

Property valuation set up digitally and future-proof

Initial situation: LB ImmoWert, a subsidiary of BayernLB and part of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, wanted to map its core property valuation process digitally and replace an existing Access solution.

Solution: Development of a custom web application for orders and research, complemented by a mobile app for data capture in the field. Since 2023 the application has been running in the cloud and is operated and developed further as part of holistic application lifecycle management.

Added value:

  • Stable digital platform as the backbone of the valuation process
  • Higher resilience and flexible resource planning thanks to the cloud
  • Ongoing adaptation to new legal requirements and process changes

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Not the questions you look up in a glossary, but the ones a decision-maker actually asks before starting a project.

How do we modernize our core banking system without replacing it?

Most banks do not replace their core banking system. agree21, OSPlus, SAP for Banking, Avaloq or Temenos stay in place and are connected to modern finance, CRM and AI layers through an integration layer. The core banking architecture stays stable while new digital processes take shape.

How do we implement DORA and BAIT technically without endangering day-to-day operations?

Usually not by replacing everything, but through an integration and evidence layer: roles, controls and audit trails are mapped centrally while your core system continues unchanged. The Access Review Agent in Microsoft Entra can prepare the recurring access reviews automatically.

Which banking processes are already suitable for AI agents today?

Today, invoice processing, payment pre-checks, customer communication and finance processes are particularly suitable. Which process offers you the greatest leverage depends on your system landscape and your data sources.

How can we use AI safely in a banking environment?

Through clearly defined use cases with set control points instead of one company-wide AI initiative all at once. Each agent is given access only to the data it needs for its task, and every decision stays documented and traceable.

When is standard software no longer enough?

Banks often differ in their processes, products and sales channels. Where standard software reaches its limits, we develop specific custom applications and connect them seamlessly to your existing IT.

Does agenic develop custom business applications for banks?

Yes. Lending processes, digital account opening, corporate customer portals or wealth management are examples where standard software often falls short. This is one of the areas where we go deepest into designing the business process itself.

How do we protect ourselves against AI-supported fraud?

Because attacks such as deepfakes and CEO fraud increasingly run automatically, detection has to keep up automatically as well. The Security Alert Triage Agent in Microsoft Defender triages reported incidents autonomously and explains every verdict traceably. Your team decides on the critical cases.

When does Microsoft Dynamics 365 usefully complement our core banking system?

Dynamics 365 complements your core banking system where isolated solutions or manual processes often exist today, for example in finance, CRM or reporting. The core system itself stays unchanged.

How does a modernization or AI project start?

With a clearly defined first step instead of a complete replacement, usually one process or one integration that shows visible value quickly, before we tackle the next building block.
